강간을 당한 피해자에게 되려 사형선고를 내리다니 이게 도대체 말이 되는 얘긴가요. 모두들 바쁘시겠지만 시간이 있으신 분은 아래 세 곳 모두 혹은 한 곳에 편지를 보내시기 바랍니다. Karteen Karikander의 생명이 달린 일입니다. 아래 주소는 각각 UAE 대통령, 내무부장관, 주한 UAE 대사관입 니다. 주한 UAE 대사관에 보내는 것이 가장 손 쉽겠지요. 주한 대사관의 경우 우체국에 가기 귀찮으신 분은 인터넷이나 PC 통 신을 통해 팩스를 보내시면 되지 않을까 합니다. 제가 퍼온 메일에 sample letter가 있는데요. 아래와 같이 보내 는 주소를 선택하고 보내는 날짜, 보내는 사람의 성명만 보태면 되겠습니다. 참고로 Amnesty International의 편지 쓰는 요령을 보니까 편지 인사말에서 대통령이나 대사에게는 Your Excellency를 쓰고, 장 관에게는 보통 Dear Minister를 쓴다는군요. 그러니까 Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan(이름이 더럽게도 길군) 대 통령이나 주한 UAE 대사에게 보내는 편지는 Your Excellency 를 쓰면 되고 Mohammed Nakhira Al Dhahiri 내무부장관에게는 Dear Minister를 쓰면 됩니다. 밥맛 떨어지는 인간들이지만.. 격식을 갖춰주는 것이 더 효과가 있다고 하니까 좀 귀찮더라도 따라 주시길. --------------------------------------------------------------------- HH President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President, Supreme Council of United Arab Emirates Presidential Court 280, Abu Dhabi U.A.E 또는 Embassador United Arab Emirates Embassy Hanam Dong 5-5, Yongsan-Ku, 140-210, Seoul, Korea 또는 H.E. It has come to my attention that, after being accused of adultery and detained for some time, Karsini was taken before the Syariah Fujairah Municipal Court and tried without any legal assistance, or even an interpreter to allow her to defend herself. I am certain you are unhappy with this process, as are many people around the world as they learn of the plight of this woman. Basic human rights standards demand a fair trial, which is obviously not possible without understanding what is happening or having access to legal representation. For a nation seeking to engage in freely with the rest of the world, it may be inappropriate to continue the practice of the death sentence, particularly in the circumstances surrounding Kartini's trial. Death by stoning would be viewed by most nations and most people in the countries with which you seek to engage as brutal and inhumane. There are many ancient practices and traditions that add value and meaning to a modern society - the death penalty by stoning for adultery is surely not one of them. I know that you are a man of great faith, and once you said "Islam is the religion of tolerance and forgiveness....of dialogue and understanding. It is Islamic social justice which has asked every Muslim to respect the other. To treat every person, no matter what his creed or race, as a special soul is a mark of Islam." I humbly ask you to think of Karsini as a 'special soul', and to show great tolerance and understanding of her situation. Please overturn her sentence and let her get on with her life. I have alerted my national embassy in your country to the situation of Kartini, and am assured that they will monitor the case closely.
