This fall, The Sound of Womb Concert,
hosted by theologian and best-selling author
Hyun-Kyung Chung, drew 3000 women and men
to hear feminist rock songs, and to learn the
Womb Sign as a sign of peace. Nurses from
North and South Korea met to talk about their
role in reunification.
지난 가을, 신학자이며 유명한 저자인 정현경의
사회로 "움 콘서트"가 열렸고, 3000여명 정도의
남녀청중이 페미니스트의 록음악과 평화의
신호로서 "자궁의 사인(Womb Sign)"을 들었다.
남북한의 간호사들이 통일에 있어서의 그들의
역할에 대해 논의하고자 만났다.
Comfort Women, aging survivors of the 80,000
Korean women forced into sexual slavery by
the Japanese in World War II, were honored at a
weekend reunion. Protests continued against U.S.
Army bases outside Seoul, where G.I.s subsidize
the sex trafficking of women, often virtual
slaves themselves, from Russia and the
Philippines.
제2차세계대전시 일본에 의해 성노예로 강제로
끌려 간 8만여 한국여성들 중 생존해 있는 종군
위안부여성들에게 경의를 표하는 행사도 주말의
만남 [정규]에서 있었다. 서울 외곽지역에 주둔하는
미군들의 여성 성매매에 항의하는 시위도
계속되고 있다. 그녀들은 실제적으로 성적
노예들이며, 러시아나 필리핀여성도 있다.
Women's studies pioneers at Ewha Womans
University, the largest women's university in the
world, hosted a meeting of their counterparts
from all over Asia. The Womens News, a
weekly feminist newspaper, acquired a tract of
land on the Jeju island popularly called
"Women's Island" for its powerful community of
women divers who harvest the surrounding
ocean, to build a center of women's culture and
history.
세계최대 여성대학인 이화여대는 한국의
여성학연구의 파이오니어 주최로 아시아 전역의
여성학자들과 함께 하는 회의를 열었다.
페미니스트 주간지 '여성신문'은 바다를 통해 삶을
영위하는 해녀들의 강력한 공동체적 성격때문에
속칭 "여성들의 섬"이라 불리어지는 제주도에 지금
대지를 매입하여 여성들의 문화와 역사의 센터인
"여성테마파크"를 그곳에 세우려 하고 있다.
I Am A Woman With A Disability became the
first conference of its kind in Korean history.
With rituals led by a female shaman in a return
to ancient tradition, members of the Feminist Art
Network held their annual retreat to build
community and plan more events.
이 섬에서 열린 "나는 장애를 가진 여성이다."
(I Am A Woman With A Disability)는
한국역사상 이러한 종류로는 최초의 컨퍼러스였다.
제주도의 옛 전통을 따라 여성무속인이 주재한
굿을 시작으로 여성문화예술기획 회원들은
회원들간의 공동체의식을 고양하고 더욱 많은
행사들을 계획하기 위해 연례적으로 해온
리트리트에 들어갔다.
All this was in addition to such regular activities
as FAN's annual Women's Film Festival In
Seoul(WFFIS), showing woman-made films from
around the world; the Asian Journal of Women's
Studies published by Ewha Womans University
Press; a second womens weekly newspaper now
successful in Seoul; and if , a lively and
well-designed feminist magazine patterned after
Ms., but with a youthful and outrageous tone of
its own.
이상의 모든 사업들 외에도 여문기획은 세계
여성영화감독들을 대상으로 하는
"서울여성영화제"를 개최하고 있다.
또 페미니즘 관점에서 아시아지역 여성문제에 대한 논문을 싣는 이화여성학회저널인
AJWS (Asian Journal of Women's Studies),
제 2의 성공적인 주간여성신문인 "Women Times",
미즈잡지를 모델로 했지만 자신들만의 젊고
개성적인 색깔을 지닌 활발하고도 멋진 'IF" 잡지간행
등등의 정기적인 활동을 들 수 있을 것이다.
So far, the area in which activists feel
themselves most lacking is electoral politics,
so they are exploring ways to elect more women
to office, and to hold political leaders accountable.
한국의 여성운동가들은 지금까지 자신들에게 있어
가장 결여된 부분은 선거 정책 부분이라고
생각하기에 이르렀고, 그들은 의회 등 관리직으로
보다 많은 여성들을 선출시키고, 정치적
지도자들에게 책임을 묻는 길을 모색하고 있다.
Thats no small order in South Korea, where
patriarchy is still enshrined in family law, the
sole female candidate for Prime Minister was
felled by the double standard, and son-preference
is so strong that the sex ratio is skewed by
women aborting female fetuses.
그러한 [여성들의] 활동은 가족법에 의해 보장되는
가부장제도가 지배적인 한국에서 쉬운 일은
아니다. 최근 국무총리로서는 역사상 처음이고
유일했던 여성후보자를 인준함에 있어 이중잣대를
적용해서 부결시키고, 남아선호사상이 너무도
강해 여아를 낙태시킴으로 인해 성비율이 불균형을
이루는 곳이 또한 한국이기 때문이다.
But women are determined to play a role in
such national goals as reunification by learning
from East and West Germany, where womens
rights were often bargained away.
Their modern successes can teach the rest of us,
as do their traditions of divers and shaman that
hint at a power that was and could be again.
그럼에도 불구하고 한국여성들은 남북통일과 같은
국가적인 목표를 향해서는 어떤 역할인가를 할
것이라고 단호하게 결심하고 있다. 그들은
동서독이 통합할 때 여성들의 권리가 자주, 아주
쉽게 포기되었다는 것을 익히 알고 있다.
그들의 현대적인 성공사례들과
또 [여성의] 힘과 그것의 재생가능성을 느끼게 하는
제주해녀와 무당의 전통들도
나머지 우리들에게
좋은 가르침과 가이드가 될 수 있을 것이다.
